Léon Cogniet

Léon Cogniet (29 Aug. 1794 – 20 Nov. 1880, both Paris) was a French Academic painter. In 1812, Cogniet entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. He also studied with and became friendly with Eugene Delacroix, Theodore Géricault, Ary Scheffer, Henry Scheffer, Jean Alaux and Xavier Sigalon. He was a resident at the Villa Medici from 1817 to 1822.

A romantic painter, his main subjects were history and portraits, and in 1817 he won the Prix de Rome. Among his numerous students were Jean-Paul Laurens, Léon Bonnat, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and Adolph-Etienne Piot.
