Rio deJarnett

Rio was born in Arizona and enjoyed spending time on his grandparents' ranch learning about farming and care of livestock.  As a young child his artistic abilities surfaced.  He began with drawing and calligraphy.  Later his talents included music, he played the bass and tuba.  He participated in Honor Orchestra and marching bands.

As a teenager, he served as an apprentice in a cultured marble shop, creating many unique designs, including furniture and jewelry.  Eventually he became a licensed general contractor and owned his own shop.  Rio has a daughter, Alexandria, a high school student.

His artistic talents today are expressed in the form of sculpture.  He works in many mediums, including wood, stone and metal.  The wood sculptures he creates with a chainsaw.  He divides his time between managing the family roadside gallery in Malibu and tending to the other family business, Malibu Mountain Apiaries, as a beekeeper, getting back to his roots in farming.

If you need to find him, drive down Kanan Road. When you see a spray of saw dust in the air, follow it as if you’re following a rainbow to the pot of gold and you will see a big “5” on his back, his “calling card” so to speak.  When he’s not carving up wood he’s carving up a soccer field.  Since age 5, Steven Zachary’s life has been engulfed by playing soccer.  After sustaining serious injuries to both of his legs, Steven decided to extend his natural talent of sculpting to chainsaw carving.  It was then that Malibu Mountain Gallery was fortunate to bring Steven in as one our full-time artists.  Steven’s work includes many beautiful tikis that show off his exceptional ability to create depth in art.
